The New Edition Story

Growing up in the 80’s I had the pleasure of going through a pile of cassette tapes and listening to different types of music genres. The genres that grabbed my attention as a kid were Hip Hop, 80’s R&B and New Jack Swing. Music groups were a huge thing back in those days and New Edition was one of my favourites.

During the recent years movie producers have been at work to create biopics on Iconic Hip Hop and R&B Musicians. Some of these Biopics include Straight Outta Compton(2015-N.W.A.), Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B(2014-Aaliyah), CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story(2013-TLC), Notorious(2009-Notorious BIG) and more.

Finally! Here is one that I’m really excited about!

The series will have 3 episodes and air on Jan. 24, 25 and 26, 2017

These young stars will be playing the roles of the New Edition members:

Bryshere Y. Gray as Michael Bivins

Elijah Kelley as Ricky Bell

Luke James as Johnny Gill

Algee Smith as Ralph Tresvant

Keith Powers as Ronnie Devoe

Woody McClain as Bobby Brown

Final Thoughts

Not every Biopic will capture every detail about the life of the artist. In social media, die hard fans will always be the first to call out the producers if they missed any details and if there are inaccurate events in the movie. So their the pressure is on even before they cast the members.

Also, there’s a comment made by one of the members of New Edition Johnny Gill during an interview with Billboard

We’re gonna try to have the album ready to go by the time the movie’s out, by 2017 when the movie drops. I’m making plans to start the recording process with that as well.

I just like watching biopics regardless if I’m a fan or not. It is good to know that even a percentage of an artist’s career/life can be preserved in a Biopic. I can’t wait to see the 3 episode miniseries, “The New Edition Story”.
